Flying High Marketing of Our Painting Business With a Drone

A physical disability has taken me out of the heavy lifting of applying paint, and I no longer participate in the painting business like I once did with my three sons.

I lend a hand in other ways.

I taught my boys all the different paces of the painting business from A to Z over a span of 35+ years.

They picked up a lot of tricks themselves and have become quite the accomplished professional painters in their own right.

When it became clear that I could no longer do painting myself, I decided to go back to school and study for a graphic arts degree, from Scottsdale Community College.

One of the best decisions I ever made.

In addition to learning how to design everything from logos, books, and newsletters with different Adobe products like Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, I began to learn how to build WordPress websites.

Digital marketing was a natural outgrowth that expanded my experience in the digital world.

My participation in the painting business is now one of promotion, web design and blog writing, as well as answering the phone and figuring out painting bids.

I have found in the process that you can teach an old dog new tricks, as well as better ways of using old tricks.

In my business of designing websites, I just happened to be in the middle of a project to design one for a drone flyer.

His name is Jacob Oberhansly of AZ Real Estate Video

I asked him if he wanted to trade his skills of flying high by recording an outdoor painting project my sons were working on in exchange for my skills in completing his website.

He jumped at the chance and so did we.

Early on a Saturday morning, Jacob showed up with his drone and other video equipment.

He captured many great aerial shots of the painters working and also set up a high-speed video with the painters spraying out the backend of the house.

Watching the house being painted in high speed was really funny, but it told a story of how we work in a very short period of time.

Jacob even did a video while riding on a skateboard, sweeping from one end of the front of the house to the other with his video camera on a gimbal to make his video capture smooth.

I am an accomplished photographer myself, so I brought along my Nikon DSLR with a long zoom lens and photographed the painters working on various stages of the exterior of this house, and also photographed Jacob shooting video.

We both came away with many great images that I will be using on both websites — Talk about killing two birds with one stone!

It was a very productive morning for not only the painters but for us digital geeks as well.
